Alex Gilbey admitted he was enjoying one of the best seasons in his career before the coronavirus lockdown in March.

Injuries cut short the 25-year-old's first two seasons at Stadium MK, but Gilbey was on course to be a contender for MK Dons' Player of the Season award with his strong showings in midfield during the tumultuous 2019/20 campaign.

And with the hiring of Russell Martin as manager, Gilbey says his game has taken another step forwards as he added five goals to his game - his best return since signing for the club in 2017.

"I think it has been my most consistent season," he said. "Earlier in the season, I was a bit too busy and was trying to do everyone else's job for them. But since Russ and Luke came in, they've told me to stick to what I do best, do my job and it has all fallen into place.

"I would have liked to score a few more goals, and I feel I've wasted too many one-on-one chances. I was working with Ryan Harley on those in the weeks building up to the lockdown, so it has been frustrating in that sense, but I'm just really looking forward to getting out there and playing again."
