Dons, already relegated back to League 1 last week, looked to be heading for a share of the points, after Alex Revell’s brace cancelled out goals from David McGoldrick and Brett Pitman, until Luke Varney headed past Charlie Burns in the last minute to win it for the home side.

Bowditch began his career with the Tractor Boys and was given a rousing reception from the home fans, but he said he couldn’t take much heart from it considering the final result.

“It’s nice they even remembered me,” he joked. “I left a long time ago! I grew up here, I learned my trade here and I got a chance to play on the big stage here. They really helped me and my career. I can’t thank the fans and the club enough.

“But it’s hard enough to come here and be happy after losing. From a personal point of view, I’d have loved to come away from here with something.

“It’s 90 minutes to sum up our last nine months. We played some good stuff, but again it’s the small details that cost us at the end again. We’ve done that numerous times this season and we get punished.

“They’re good players in this league, they’re worth a lot of money. It’s just unfortunate we’ve come out on the losing end again.

“It’s a learning curve, but we’ve got to take this into next season. Sometimes we’ve lacked that little bit of quality or that little bit of nous. This year, it hasn’t quite panned out.

“Football is all about the good times and the bad times. If I had a career without any bad times, I’d be in a party of one. I’ve never been relegated before, and I never want to feel this again.”
