Zak Jules may be player to replace MK Dons skipper Dean Lewington who 'can't go on forever' Russell Martin admitted.

Lewington has played 30 games this season albeit playing in a new role in the left of a back three under Martin's regime. However, despite his distaste for playing at centre back, the 36-year-old has been playing some of his best football in the position this season.

But while many tried, all have failed to usurp the skipper from his spot in the Dons starting line-up down the years - the list too many to mention.

Jules, arriving on deadline day from Walsall, is a left-footed centre back, who can also ply his trade at left-back, and at 23, fits into the mould the likes of signings Daniel Harvie, Warren O'Hora and Harry Darling also do - players for the future.

While there are no immediate plans for Lewington to drop down the pecking order behind Jules, Martin admitted the captain cannot go on forever, and he believes Jules is the right man to challenge Lewington for that spot.

"Zak is physically outstanding, athletic, mobile, moves well, powerful, quick and robust. He's everything we'd want our defenders to do. He'll really suit the way we play, and there is plenty of room for improvement.

"He knows he has fierce competition with our back three playing so well, especially the skipper who has been outstanding. It's an area we needed to strengthen because Deano can't go on forever, but he's got the shirt by rights.

"Zak knows he will have to bide his time and he will be desperate to get that as soon as possible."
