Fitting into MK Dons' system has been pretty seamless so far for Zak Jules.

The 24-year-old has started every game he has been available for since signing for Dons on deadline day from Walsall at left wing-back - a role he is still learning how to perfect.

Helping Dons to three wins and a draw though, and scoring his first goal for the club, Jules said he is still adapting to the position but feels he has made a strong start.

"It's different to what I'm used to," he admitted. "I'm a centre-half by trade but I can also play at left-back. Left wing-back is a more demanding role, it's a lot harder on your legs! But it's one I'm enjoying. We keep a lot of the ball which helps.

"I've always considered my self a ball-playing defender. Playing in these positions where a lot more is demanded of me is fine with me, to be honest. Playing in a team when all the team-mates want the ball helps too!"

One thing he is having to get used to though is the attacking expectations in the role.

He continued: "It's fun in that sense, it's not as fun when the ball gets turned over and I have to run all the way back! In my first game, I was being in positions in the 18-yard box waiting for the ball to come to the back stick for me, so it was a bit alien but I'm getting used to that. Hopefully I can kick on in that position.

"I wouldn't say I practice finishing much! I go into games with the mentality that a chance may come my way, and being prepared to take it. It's a different approach to when you start a game at centre half – you're more gambling on a set-piece."

Russell Martin praised the defender for the way he has fit into the side so far in a position he does not believe will be his long-term spot.

"Zak has been great," said the manager. "Long term he’s in a different position to what he’s in now but it really adds to us.

"He should have more goals and has been a real threat for us in a new position. We do it differently to most in that position. He’s done better than he thinks he has, we’re trying to show him how good of a player he can be. I really like Zak as a player and a person. The fact he’s showing how capable he can be is testament to him."
