It has been a breakout season for David Kasumu, and one he has had to work for.

The 19-year-old has raked up 29 appearances and two goals this season, having previously made five in the three years previously. Heading into the campaign, few, including Kasumu himself, would have predicted he would become a regular.

But Kasumu said he knew where he had to improve during pre-season, and did as much as he could to make sure he would at least be in contention.

"In the off-season, I knew what I had to do and had to get better at and I knew if I worked hard, there could be an opportunity," he said. "Playing as many games as I have, I'm just grateful for the opportunity to play and improve.

"I just want to come in and help the team by bringing intensity, energy and win the ball back. Hopefully I keep getting games and we can keep getting results.

"Russ has come in and we've changed the way we are out of possession – we're more intense and I think it suits me as a player. We want a high press, we want to win the ball back quickly, so it really suits me. It means a lot more running, but we run a lot in training so it's normal!"

Kasumu rooms with fellow academy product Sam Nombe, who signed a new contract with the club on Monday. Much like Kasumu, Nombe has enjoyed a breakout season at Stadium MK.

"Sam is a good player," Kasumu added. "Coming through the academy with him, I've known him for many years, I know what he's all about and it's good he's signed on and can carry on improving."
