Having been denied an earlier chance when he rounded keeper Kieran Jimmy, Lawless was in the right place at the right time to poke home the winner in the 86th minute to progress see off their SSML Division 1 opponents and extend Town's undefeated streak to 11 games and book a home tie against SSML Premier Division leaders London Colney.

In truth, Newport made a meal of the tie, coming up against Broadfields, who play a tier below them. But the home side made a dream start when Sam O'Neill side-footed Town into the lead just three minutes in.

Keeper Jimmy denied Lawless and Darryl Smith as the Swans threatened to run away with the game inside 20 minutes.

But the visitors weren't out of it as Fazel Koriya was required at the other end to clear Josh Warren's free kick, while Billy Smith also saw a decent strike deflected behind for a corner. Smith then had one cleared off the line as the sides went in at the break with just a goal between them.

Broadfields got their reward on the hour mark in the form of an equaliser from Rex Kimona, who was left unmarked to nod home Warren's free kick.

Not fancying a replay, Newport upped the tempo and the pressure on Jimmy. Lawless, Koriya and Dave Baker all had decent efforts denied by the United defence.

And they thought they'd broken the deadlock when Lawless rounded the keeper and got his shot away, only to be denied by last gasp tackle by Jade McCrea. The resultant corner thoigh was only cleared as far as Lawless who calmly passed the ball into the net to score what proved to be the winning goal with four minutes left.
