Woburn and Wavendon Lions have been given a huge boost in the form of £4,500 to launch two new teams ahead of the new season.

The grant comes courtesy of Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.

The grant will allow Woburn & Wavendon FC to grow one Under 18 girls ‘Lioness’ team and one Under 17 boys ‘Lions’ team for next season.

In addition to playing opportunities, this will deliver additional coaching and refereeing opportunities with appropriate FA courses.

Phased over a three year period, an additional Ladies team and adult mens team are also planned.

I an Doggett, WWFC Chairman said he hopes the grant will reverse the trend of declining numbers of young people playing the game.

“This grant is an immense boost for our club enabling us to target resources at age groups which have traditionally seen numbers decline,” he said.

“I am particularly pleased that our Lioness section will be boosted as this will enable us to build upon its huge success and traditions.”

It rounds out an excellent season for the club. Two weeks ago, their U16s girls side completed an almost perfect season on as they defeated Garston 4-0 at AFC Kempston to complete a sensational treble by winning the Beds and Herts League Cup Final, h aving already wrapped up the league title as well as the County Cup.
