NEWPORT Pagnell Town became the first team to take points off St Ives this season as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Willen Road on Tuesday night.

The Cambridgeshire outfit arrived with a 100 per cent start from their first five games of the United Counties League Premier Division season, but that record was under serious threat against a Swans side looking to bounce back to winning ways following their FA Cup exit on Saturday.

The home side took the lead after 22 minutes with a close range header by Richard Armstrong and a shock looked on the cards.

However, Conor Washington – the UCL’s leading goal-scorer – saved St Ives’ blushes with his ninth strike of the campaign and neither side could find a winner.

That result keeps St Ives top of the table, and Newport in fifth place, but still unbeaten in the league ahead of a trip to Peterborough Northern Star on Saturday.

The Swans’ FA Cup first qualifying round defeat came 3-2 at Chalfont St Peter, with Daren Dykes and Kyle Welch getting the away goals.

Tuesday night’s football also saw a shocking 5-0 home defeat for Cranfield United against Langford and 4-1 loss for New Bradwell St Peter to Buckingham Athletic.
