After the manager said he felt his side were suffering a hangover from last season, Newport took the lead on the half hour when Harry Stratton curled home a beauty, before a moment of madness saw Nirvana reduced to 10 men for a swipe at a Newport player.

Dom Lawless came off the bench to make his first appearance of the season and showed he is still very much as UCL hitman by converting with his first chance, firing in from the edge of the box via the underside of the bar.

Newport controlled the rest of the game against a tiring Nirvana side, so it was of little surprise when Yaw Ofosu made it 3-o with nine minutes to go to complete the scoring.

The result, Newport’s first win of the UCL campaign, sees them climb above Nirvana in the table, now 12th after three games played.

“We knew that we had to improve on our last two league performances,” said manager Lynch afterwards.

“I had to make a couple of changes due to suspensions and injuries and wanted a reaction from the lads.

“At 2-0, We then controlled the rest of the game without too many scares and put the game to bed when Fazel’s corner was nodded it down and Yaw Ofosu toed the ball over the line to make it 3-0.
