Russell Martin felt his side did enough to progress into the second round of the Carabao Cup on Saturday, but squandered too many chances in front of goal as Coventry snatched a late winner at Stadium MK.

Tyler Walker's 81st-minute goal for the Championship side was enough to separate the teams, but it came after Dons had missed four excellent changes, including a first-half penalty which Carlton Morris saw saved. The Sky Blues were reduced to 10-men in the penalty incident, which saw Matthew Sorinola downed by Declan Drysdale to earn him his marching orders.

Speaking afterwards, Martin was disappointed with the chances Morris and strike partner Sam Nombe missed, and said he will be demanding more from them.

"Sam and Carlton are both disappointed not to score," he said. "They had the chances. We created a lot, we moved the ball well and looked dangerous.

"Even with 11 men, we dominated and controlled the game. When they're down to 10 men, you have to take a chance. If we score the penalty, it's a different game. We need to make sure if this happens again, we have to find the net.

"The guys need to sharpen up in training, but ultimately nothing can replicate what they do in front of goal. If there is one game they can be forgiven it's probably today – their first competitive game in so long – but they have to improve for the next game.

"I'm really disappointed not to win it. We controlled the even when it was 11 vs 11, we created some really good chances, and then got the penalty but we regained composure.

Playing against 10 men is not easy, but I thought we'd go on from there. I felt we should have had a couple of goals but we didn't. I said at half time the only way they'd score was a counter-attack or a set-piece. We stopped the counter-attack really well, but we gave away a silly free-kick and didn't deal with it.

"I'm angry and disappointed by it because the performance deserved a lot more, and I don't want to see it again. I don't want to see all the positives and lose 1-0. Big moments in games define games and we didn't do well enough in them. We had more than enough chances and big moments in front of the goalkeeper and we didn't take them."
