Dons boss Russell Martin knows Peterborough counterpart Darren Ferguson well - the latter signed him to play for Posh back in 2008.

Both Peterborough and Dons had just been promoted from League Two - Dons as champions - but their momentum saw them become contenders to go back-to-back behind champions Leicester City. While Dons lost their way in the closing stages and had to settle for an unsuccessful play-off campaign, Peterborough, with Martin installed as skipper, secured second and with it a place in the Championship before he moved to Norwich City.

Ferguson is now in his third spell at the helm of the London Road club after returning last year, but the club's promotion to the Championship is a spell Martin looks back on fondly.

"I really enjoyed working with Darren in my time there," he said. "We only spent about 14 months together but it was really successful – we got promoted, he made me his captain too, so I was really grateful for that. I really improved under him there, and I really enjoyed it and I still speak to him occasionally.

"He's a man I have a lot of respect for, at a club I really enjoyed playing for for a year. He's had real success there too, sometimes managers and clubs just fit. He knows the club inside out, he knows what the owner expects. They have a clear way of doing things, the way they sell players and recruit, earning a lot of money over the years doing that.

"Back when I was there, I saw the talent they sold – George Boyd, Aaron McLean, Craig Mackail-Smith. They're a club that gets the big picture, and accept it will be bumpy at times, and they're always one of the top sides in this league."

Posh head to Stadium MK fourth in League One, after a comprehensive 4-1 win over Rochdale on Saturday, courtesy of a hat-trick from former Dons loanee Jonson Clarke-Harris.

"They have a real threat again this year," Martin continued. "They sold (Ivan)Toney in the summer, but in Clarke-Harris they've got a striker on real form who is a big threat.

"It will be a tough game, there's no doubt about it. But in big games where no-one has expected us to do well, against teams at the top of the league, we've put in a really good performance, so I'm hoping that's the same on Tuesday."
