"We should be glowing about the players, but we've been let down by a really poor goal to concede," said Russell Martin after a 97th minute header from Oxford's Elliot Lee snatched away what looked to be a brilliant victory for MK Dons on Saturday.

After weathering Oxford's early intensity, Andrew Surman fired home his second goal in a week to give Dons a 14th minute lead at Stadium MK as the home side began to establish themselves in the game.

While Karl Robinson's men threw the kitchen sink at Dons in the second period, they had little to write home about until the final 15 minutes when Dan Agyei fires just wide and Anthony Forde hit the post for the U's

It looked as though Dons had done enough to boucne back perfectly from the midweek disappointment of losing 4-2 to Shrewsbury by claiming the win until Lee got on the end of a header back across the face of goal to level things up.

"We were the better team," Martin said. "I'm sure their manager will say something else, but we were the better team. We controlled it, started really well.

"I should be talking about the performance and how delighted I am, but I'm angry and disappointed with the goal we concede so late. Too many moments we had to stop it and prevent it, but we didn't.

"I'm proud of the performance. It was much more 'us' than on Tuesday, we played some really nice stuff. It was a brilliant goal too so I'm pleased with that.

"We managed the game really well, we just had to see it through. We should be talking about a clean sheet against Oxford who are a really good side who have really good players at the top end, were really aggressive and left a lot of players up there to counter attack. But we limited that. We just didn't manage it enough in the last minute.

"We have a point, it's a good point on the whole against a team who are competing. Northampton was a different game which we came though and won – we can't always be pure and pretty. Today was more us and felt more like what we wanted to do. I'm pleased with that, but it's still very raw. I feel like we deserved the three points."
