Russell Martin expects many out-of-contract players in League One and League Two will struggle to find clubs next season as a result of the impact coronavirus is having on football.

With 12 players out of contract at Stadium MK at the end of July, the landscape of the footballing world could leave many without options for next season.

Martin says most clubs will be left financially strapped when they are allowed to return to work, and that will have knock-on effects when it comes to recruitment for next season, leaving the players in a difficult position.

He said: "This will be the hardest summer for most professional footballers in the lower leagues because of the financial straight put on clubs. In general, agents and players know it will be difficult. There is a lot of insecurity and people will have to do what they can to get through it."

With so many of his players out of contract, Martin admitted he cannot guarantee any of them a future at the club, but said as soon as he becomes aware of the financial state of play at MK Dons, he will make sure the players are updated too.

"Honestly, we don't know what our budget is going to be," he added. "Once I know everything and what we're doing, they'll know. I'll be honest with every single one of them.

"I have ideas and plans that I want to do, but that will depend on what we can do, financially. I'd love to let them know now, or even a few weeks ago, but they understand that. It will be difficult. I've got a great relationship with the lads, but when the time comes, they'll get honestly from me."
