Jack Davies said even when he was a player, Russell Martin backed him to succeed.

The 17-year-old centre back signed his first professional deal with the club today (Monday), but was a firm favourite of his manager even before he took up the post.

Having joined the club as a 10-year-old, Davies was a regular in Dons' pre-season training under Paul Tisdale last season but injury forced him out of most of the campaign, limiting him to a few appearances in the U23s.

After signing his first deal, he said Martin's advice over the last year has been invaluable.

"Even when Russ was a player, he was the one to put his arm around me and offer me advice," he said. "He was picking up on things I was doing wrong – but he was also there for me. He’s a great role model and he’s been the same since he’s become the manager. He was always checking up on me during my injury and he’s now shown the faith in me.

Davies continued: "I’m buzzing to sign my first deal – it’s something I’ve been working for all my life. The hard work doesn’t stop here though, I’ve got to keep working and keep showing what I can do.

“You don’t realise as a kid in the academy what you’re going to face through the years. I’m delighted that the club has put their faith in me and got behind me."

Martin added: "Since Jack has come in he’s been impressive, he’s done really well. He’s got a really good mentality and is a leader among his peers. He’s a talented footballer and has shown a lot of resilience to come back from a long term injury so early in his career. All of those things and the way he’s come back since lockdown has been impressive.

"He’s looked strong both physically and mentally. He’s been exactly right and deserves his contract and knows the hard work starts here."
