George Baldock’s loan deal with Oxford United will be cut short as MK Dons have recalled him.
The 22-year-old has become a fan favourite at the Kassam Stadium this season, helping the U’s to third in League 2.
He also spent the second half of last season on loan with Oxford.
His performances prompted Dons boss Karl Robinson to describe him as ‘the best full back in League 2’ earlier this month, prompting rumours of an early recall.
“George is showing everyone he’s one of the best full backs outside the Championship,” said Robinson. “He’s the best in League 2.”
And after Oxford signed Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny on an initial one month loan earlier this week, news of Baldock’s return to stadium:mk broke on Thursday.
Robinson said: “George has put in some fantastic performances for Oxford. He has gained a lot of credibility for those displays and the way he’s conducted himself with them.
“(Oxford boss) Michael Appleton and his coaching staff have aided the development of George, who has been through a real transition over the last 18 months. He’s found a defined role and now his aim is to come back here and force his way into the team.
“We want every player we feel can influence us during the run-in, here at stadiummk. He’s one of our own and I know he will dedicate everything he’s got to helping us over these important months.”
Appleton heaped praise on the defender, saying: “We firmly believe he goes back as not only a better player, but a better person having spent 12 months here. I hope he goes on to fulfil his career that I know he is capable of.”
Baldock will be play his final game for Oxford on Saturday in their FA Cup fourth round match against Blackburn Rovers before returning to stadium:mk.
