Dons duo keep coy on key promotion clash between Salford and Bromley

It will be a watching brief again for MK Dons this evening for an important League Two game

Neither Paul Warne nor Liam Kelly were willing to give a prediction or indeed a preference ahead of this evening’s League Two clash between Bromley and Salford - the implications of which could have a big bearing on MK Dons’ season.

Bromley go into this evening’s game at the Peninsula Stadium having already secured automatic promotion, knowing a win would move them five points clear of Dons, all but sealing them the title while leaving Salford unable to catch the side from MK1 before the season is out.

However, Karl Robinson’s Ammies are keen themselves to sneak into the automatic promotion spots, and know a win for themselves would move them above Cambridge United and into the top three, two points behind Dons.

Should Salford get something from the game, it would mean victory on Saturday for Paul Warne’s side would see them hit top spot heading into their final match of the season, with a win away at Fleetwood enough to win them the League Two crown.

With so many connotations, Warne kept his cards close to his chest as to what he would like to see come 10pm on Thursday.

“Obviously, I have an opinion on the way I want it to go, but I won’t share that,” he said. “If the result did go favourably for us tonight, we could go top on Saturday and though there are a lot of ifs, buts and maybes, we could no into the Fleetwood game knowing a win would win us the league. That’s the reason we’ve involved in the sport.

“The opportunity to go for a title is something special. I wouldn’t choose that over promotion, promotion first and foremost, we have to nail that. I’ve had eight promotions as a player and manager but never a title, nor have I ever been close enough to pretend!

“I’ll absolutely be paying attention to it but I can’t decide whether I’m going to watch it tonight, I might watch it with the coaches.”

Midfielder Kelly, meanwhile, said while he will be watching the game, the result, be it win, lose or draw for either side, does not impact the fact Dons still need to beat Tranmere on Saturday to secure their own fate.

He said: “I’ll probably tune in to see how it goes. I have no preference really, we can’t influence that so we’ll just see how it goes.

“We’ve got two games left and if we win them both, we put ourselves in a good position to be promoted, and then hopefully go for the title so we’ll just see what happens.”
