ALAN Smith will meet with MK Dons boss Karl Robinson today (Tuesday) to discuss terms of a permanent contract at stadium:mk, the Citizen understands.

The former Leeds and Manchester United star featured 18 times for Dons last season while on loan from Premier League Newcastle, scoring twice.

The 31-year-old has been on holiday in the USA since his release from Newcastle – where he spent five years – at the end of last season, but is back in the UK and is expected to meet with Robinson.

The Dons manager has made no secret of his intentions to try and sign the former England international, and despite interest from numerous other clubs – including some on the continent – he appears close to getting his man.

Robinson described Smith’s arrival on loan in January as Dons’ best ever signing, and the striker turned midfielder who was once worth £7 million is likely to join pre-season training today ahead of potentially putting pen to paper.
