Exits a must now for MK Dons if they are to make further January additions
MK Dons’ squad size is already fit to bursting
The remainder of the transfer window could be a waiting game for MK Dons fans as the priority switches to seeing more players depart before bringing new faces in.
With the squad capped at 22 senior pros (goalkeepers and players U21 are not counted in the cap), head coach Paul Warne is flirting dangerously with the upper ceiling, with 24 currently on the books.
It means the act of moving players on is of a top priority now for Warne, or he risks having players on the training ground who have no chance of making his match-day squads.
“I don’t want to see players who are standing around not registered to play, you can only carry so many players,” he said. “Some players will leave, or regrettably will be a part of training and not be able to play. No-one wants to see that, and I’ve never had to manage that before, and it’s not something I intend to do.
“We always listen when clubs come in for our players, we have to consider what that player wants as well. I might have players who aren’t in the team who can see a way in, but others who can’t see a way in.
“There is natural erosion, and you sometimes have to cut the grass back to let it grow. I think there will be players to leave, and then there might be an addition.
“It’s not really a task for me, but for the sporting director or the head of recruitment to discuss.”
