First goal could open the floodgates for Nombe as he sets sights on Wigan

MK Dons striker Sam Nombe spoke ahead of this evening’s game against Wigan Athletic

Chances have been at a premium for MK Dons front man Sam Nombe but he believes once he gets one, plenty more will follow.

The 27-year-old already has six goals to his name for the club, they came during his previous spell at the club before his departure for Exeter City in 2021.

Despite drawing praise from head coach Paul Warne for his hard-working performances in and out of possession in the opening few games this season, Nombe’s sights of goal have been few and far between since his return, with a couple of half-chances against Norwich City and a header over the bar all he really has to write home about.

The striker though believes his persistence will be key in earning him those chances to re-open his account.

“I’m just waiting for that chance to come my way,” he said. “I’ve always said the first goal is always the hardest. Once I get one, they normally start to flood in. I’m just waiting for that opportunity.

“I had the header at Leicester which I put over, I couldn’t head it down so that’s on me. But I know if I can continue to perform as I am, more chances will come.”

And he hopes something will drop his way when the side take on Wigan Athletic in Greater Manchester on Wednesday. The Latics have lost all three of their opening matches this season, but Nombe is wary of a backlash at the Brick Community Stadium.

He said: “They’ve had a difficult start but we can’t dwell or fixate on that because any game can be changed, momentum can be flipped and a team’s form can be turned around. We don’t want to go there and allow that form to change on us.

“We want to go there, get all three points. We’re always trying to do that, regardless of who we’re facing. They’re a good side, they’ve been unlucky in a few games, which might be something we can try and play off. We just need to focus on what we do and take all three points.”
