"I feel more like myself again": Thompson-Sommers hopes he is over his early-season ailments
The midfielder hopes he can work his way back into Paul Warne’s plans
Kane Thompson-Sommers hopes he has seen the last of the injury frustrations which have marred his early season.
The 24-year-old has not started in the league for MK Dons since the second game of the season away at Barrow, but he limped out after just 29 minutes. Since then, the ex-Halifax man has made just nine league appearances, all of them coming off the bench after a series of minor issues continued to hamper him.
A more regular feature in the last month though, albeit still as a substitute, Thompson-Sommers’ equaliser against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday was something which he hopes can kick his season back into gear after a string of injuries.
“In the last few weeks, I’ve felt more like myself again,” he said. “I started the first few games of the season but got a groin injury and since then, I’ve had to deal with a few other issues too.
“I’m getting more minutes, and I’m starting to show what I’m really capable of. Hopefully I can continue to contribute and go on from there.”
Speaking after his equaliser at Prenton Park, he continued: “It’s a long season, everyone has issues that you have to deal with. Moments like this can kick-start your season. You’d rather finish well than start well and finish rubbish!
“I hope things can turn, I get more minutes and we can finish well. There is still a long way to go, we’re only in the middle of the season. I want to put the beginning of the season behind me and I can kick on.”
With fierce competition in the midfield though, Thompson-Sommers knows he has his work cut out to get into Paul Warne’s starting plans, but he feels the depth they have puts Dons in a good spot.
He added: “The squad we have here is so good, talent-wise, but we’ve really bonded well too. Everyone gets on, we’re all pushing in the same direction and everyone wants to win. There’s a great unity amongst everyone, and that goes a long way.”
