MK Dons fans turned out in good numbers to watch their team give La Liga outfit Rayo Vallecano a good 4-3 beating on a memorable Wednesday night at stadiummk.
The Madrid-based club, who achieved their highest ever league position of eighth last season, have been training in England and attracted a good pre-season turnout for Dons’ first home pre-season game.
Dons have been solid if not spectacular during July, with a handful of routine wins and a couple of draws as they get into shape for the new season.
But Wednesday night’s win certainly was spectacular as Karl Robinson’s men gave the Spanish team a lesson in how to retain possession and put the ball in the back of the net.
Pre-season friendlies are often drab, boring affairs, but this was anything but as the vast majority of the 3,532 fans in attendance left the ground with a feeling of satisfaction that they had got more than their money’s worth.
There probably won’t be a warmer evening of football at stadiummk this season. The muggy conditions would have made the Spanish side feel at home, but they were slow out of the blocks and Dons made them pay when skipper Dean Lewington headed in a corner after three minutes.
But Rayo were quick to hit back and Johan Mojica drew them level eight minutes later. The same man then fired the tourists in front to give their dozen or so supporters plenty to shout about.
But the game was turned on its head before the break when Luke Chadwick tapped in after good work from Daniel Powell, and new recruit Jason Banton found the back of the net from Darren Potter’s pass to give Dons an incredible 3-2 half time lead.
And Potter then got on the scoresheet himself early in the second half as Dons continued to excel themselves.
Potter was in the thick of the action once more as his handball gave the visitors a penalty that Adrian Gonzalez tucked away for 4-3. But they couldn’t find an equaliser and in fact it was Dons who looked the more likely to score again.
Dons conclude their pre-season schedule at home to a Tottenham Hotspur XI next Wednesday night, but before then they visit Barnet at their Hive Stadium on Saturday.
