Paul Mitchell announced his arrival in Milton Keynes with the sort of performance that made supporters realise what they have been missing.
The pugnacious midfielder arrived on a month's loan from Wigan at the end of last week and with Ben Chorley still needed at the back, slotted in alongside Gary Smith against Wrexham.
"I thought he was outstanding," said manager Danny Wilson of Mitchell's debut against Wrexham. "You need that little bit of devilment and certainly he can play as well. But when things are tough, he relishes those situations and we saw today what he can bring to the team."
Mitchell is Wilson's first foray into the transfer market, but certainly not his last.
"With a bit of luck we can bring someone else in this week," Wilson said. "Just because we got a win doesn't mean everything is ok, because it's not. We still need to bulk the squad up and we still need to get some more presence in the team."
On that score, centre back and captain Mark Williams came on for the final five minutes against Wrexham. It was his first game in more than a month after being sidelined with a troublesome groin injury.
