Some first team players will be allowed to leave MK Dons in the summer to open up the spending budget.

Alan Smith, Dean Bowditch, Darren Potter, Stephen Gleeson, Izale McLeod, Antony Kay, Lee Hodson and Ben Reeves are all in the final few months of their contracts with the club, and could walk away for free in June when their deals expire.

A deal is known to be on the table for Darren Potter, while Hodson and Reeves’ contracts both contain options for another year.

But Dons boss Karl Robinson admits some players may need to look for a new club in the summer.

“There’s always that possibility,” Robinson said. “I do need to make way in the budget to bring in new players, so I need to have a serious look at that.

“There are internal conversations with agents and players that have to remain internal until the time comes we feel it’s right to put it out there, but there will be some contracts that will run out and will allow the player to be free agents.

“But there are a few that we want to renew as well.

“We are close to one or two.

“We have to make sure we get that right. It’s vitally important that the deals are right for the club and the players and their families.

“We are not too far away from announcing some soon.”
