Special goal from Gilbey lifts weight off MK Dons' shoulders

Captain Alex Gilbey’s wonder-goal against Luton Town helped MK Dons to their first win of the season

Goals don’t come much better than Alex Gilbey’s incredible volley against Luton Town, with the MK Dons skipper just pleased it came with three points attached.

Skipping past two Luton players, the ball bounced up nicely for him to hit sweetly on the up, sending it sailing over keeper James Shea from 35 yards to give the hosts a brilliant lead at Stadium MK.

While Jordan Clark managed to pull one back for the Hatters with 20 minutes to go, Aaron Collins’ penalty seven minutes later - his tenth goal of the season - secured Dons a much needed victory.

Never one to shy away from some of his more impressive goals, Gilbey said: “I’ve tried to nutmeg someone, which I’ve not managed in years, and then it has popped up nicely for me, I thought ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’ and I’ve hit it.

“There were all sorts going through my mind. I thought if I lost it and they counter… I couldn’t cross it from there, all the lads have told me I’ve shanked the cross. But I’ve absolutely rifled one in!

“I was watching it, and thought it had a chance. I saw the keeper half got to it, and it’s gone in - another good goal by me!”

With it putting Dons on course for their first win of the season, the captain admitted he was carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders heading into the clash with Luton.

He said: “I felt a lot of pressure on my shoulders, especially where the club is and the start of the season we’ve had. I felt like I needed a performance, and if I could drag one of two with me, it’s a big thing. Fortunately, it has dragged all the lads with us.

“In the warm-up, it had a different feeling about it, we were at it. We knew what happened last week, we knew we had to right a lot of wrongs. We just had a really good feeling. It was what the team needed, what I needed personally, and thankfully it’s come with three points.

“At the whistle, I felt shattered, old, everything! I’m happy for the club, the fans, it’s something we all needed.”
