Turning draws into wins cannot happen soon enough for Goode

The MK Dons centre-back reflected on three draws at the start of the season

Defender Charlie Goode has called on MK Dons to start turning draws into wins after they picked up a third tie in a row on Saturday.

The 0-0 draw with Leicester City proved the toughest of Dons’ opening trio of games, with Russell Martin’s Foxes heavily tipped to bounce straight back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Having also played against relegated Oxford United and well-back Huddersfield Town in their opening three matches, the three points and unbeaten start to their name makes for decent enough reading, but Goode believes they must start picking up victories if they are to mount a serious promotion challenge this season.

“As soon as the fixtures game out, everyone knew this start would be really tough,” he said. “Leicester will beat a lot of teams this year. The players they brought on were incredible, and shows what they have.

“Us being us, and looking at where we want to get to this season, three points out of nine isn’t good enough to achieve what we want. Oxford, on another day, we hold out and get the points, last week easily could have been out of the game in the first-half but we could have nicked it in the second and today, a draw maybe favours us but I think we deserved it at the back.

“We’ve got to turn draws into wins. We’re at the start of a big week now, and hopefully it’s the start.”

For much of the second-half, Dons were on the back foot against Leicester but offered up only shots from distance en route to their first clean sheet of the season.

Though they offered little in the way of a rebuttal at the other end, Goode said that too has to change.

He continued: “It was a tough game. Leicester are a really good team, they move the ball really well. Some of the movement, you don’t really see that at this level.

“Obviously, we’re really happy with the clean sheet but we’d like to have given them a bit more to think about. We’ll keep working on that and goals will come.

“It didn’t feel like they were going to score, I don’t think. We had to stay switched on, they were getting it on half-way and playing balls through the middle and it was hard to marshal.

“We had a game plan to be a bit more aggressive with how we pressed. The clean sheet is something to build on.”
