Picking up their first win in six was a huge relief to Dons boss Liam Manning.

Will Grigg and Bradley Johnson were on the scoresheet as Dons inflicted Charlton’s first home defeat of the season, while ending their own five-match losing streak to lift themselves from the foot of the table.

In a positive and nearly complete performance, Dons were resolute at the back against a Charlton side capable of putting sides to the sword, while there was more icing on the cake with a return of Mo Eisa after six months out.

The win though was a huge relief to Manning.

“I'm happy for the players and the staff. We've been on a tough run but the togetherness we've had, the application of the players has well has been great so I'm really happy for them.

“It has been a challenge managing confidence but the players have believed in themselves and what we're doing.

“We saw tonight the players are all in. We've been more like us in the last few games, irrespective of the results but we have to keep believing and improving.

“The mood has always been ok amongst the players. They've not come in moping or feeling sorry for themselves. They won't want to be where we're at but they're up for the challenge.”

Luck on their side

Manning felt his side were owed a bit of luck after decisions have gone against them this season in their 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

A foul on Barry earned Dons a 66th minute penalty and Inness a second yellow card, but Addicks boss Ben Garner felt the foul was outside the penalty area.

Dons lost earlier this season to Sheffield Wedneday when Dean Lewington was adjudged to have fouled in the box, when in fact it was outside, leaving Manning more than happy to take the luck where they can get it.

He said: “I've not seen it back but we're owed one - we lost to Sheffield Wednesday with a penalty that was outside the box. Whether it is or isn't, I won't focus on that.

“On the grand scheme of the game, we had the better chances and large periods of control. I don't remember Jamie being tested, while Griggy hit the bar, the keeper made a save off Bradley Johnson, Louie Barry rounded the keeper and of course the free-kick at the end.

“We looked the more dangerous.”
