It is easy for football managers to get carried away and make bold predictions ahead of a new season, but Darren Turner has humble expectations.
The New Bradwell St Peter boss takes over a team which lost 34 of their 40 games last season, finding himself in South Midlands Division Two with an entirely new squad.
With most of last year’s team leaving over the summer, Turner has done a miraculous job recruiting a new side, as well as bringing in a new assistant and two new coaches to the backroom staff.
And during pre-season, the club have been able to celebrate something they’ve needed for a while - a victory.
“We’ve had a couple of wins in pre-season,” said Turner. “We’ve got to teach them how to win again.
“It has been a tough year for the club, but we feel we’ve got the right team in place to get the club back on it’s feet again.”
Their Division Two season kicks off on Saturday against Tring Corinthians, but Turner isn’t getting too carried away with his expectations.
He said: “After brining together the team over the summer, we’re not expecting much. I’d be really happy with a mid-table finish to be honest, picking up a few wins along the way to get people buzzing about the place again.
“We’ve all worked so hard behind the scenes to get the club sorted out, so the committee deserve something to smile about.”
On Monday, the club take on an MK Dons side at the Recreation Ground. Entry for the match, which kicks off at 7.45pm is free.
The club are also keen to bring in a physio for the forthcoming season. If you’re interested, call Darren on 07854 156890.
