The 23-year-old stopper has spent time on loan at Northampton, Accrington and Bristol Rovers during his career, but found first team opportunities at the DW Stadium hard to come by.

Having signed a two-year deal for Karl Robinson’s side, Nicholls has his sights set on playing regularly for his new club.

“I wasn’t really getting a chance at Wigan,” he said. “I want to play games, so all I can do is work hard and really push for playing time.

“I’m over the moon. There were a couple of clubs interested but I feel MK Dons are going in the right direction – it was a no brainer for me.

“I like to be dominant and when I play football, I like to be aggressive - my stature and my size really helps with that.”
