It is a matter of when, not if for Dean Lewington to sign a new MK Dons contract to remain with the club.

The skipper is out of contract at the end of the month, and could sign elsewhere on a free transfer. But Lewington, who has racked up more than 700 appearances for the club since it moved to Milton Keynes in 2004, is unlikely to be pulling on a different shirt next season, according to manager Russell Martin.

"I've spoken to Lewie – he doesn't want to go anywhere else," said Martin. "He's been here his whole career. He buys into what we're doing, and he's really important as the captain.

"He really thrives in the way we train and play, and was excellent every week when we played.

"I can't talk for him, but I'm really confident he'll be with us next season."
