He had been the first name on the teamsheet for much of last season, but after time out of the side, Jordan Houghton is back to his best according to his manager.

The 24-year-old's role in the side as the lynchpin in front of the defence had been taken recently by David Kasumu, who also impressed in the position and kept Houghton out of the team. But when Kasumu was shown his fifth yellow card in League One away at Blackpool last weekend, Houghton returned to the side for Tuesday's 2-0 win over Wigan. And he kept his place in the side on Saturday when Dons drew 1-1 with AFC Wimbledon.

Russell Martin praised his midfielder's attitude after being dropped from the side, and indeed his performances in the previous two games in returning to the side.

"He has been outstanding for two games, and one of our best players," said Martin. "He came out and was disappointed because he was one of the biggest parts of what we've done since we took over. But his reaction has been outstanding – one of the best professionals you could work with.

"He has been top drawer for the last couple of games now so he has to maintain that level of performance."
