Poachers leave it late to dent Newport's title hopes

A late Boston Town strike two minutes from time saw them pick up an unlikely victory over Newport Pagnell Town, denting their title ambitions.

Richard Ford’s 88th minute goal snatched a 3-2 win for the Poachers as Town lost ground to the two teams above them in the UCL Premier Division, now seven points off top spot having played two more games.

Despite their lowly league position, Simon Ashton gave Boston the lead after 31 minutes, climbing unmarked to meet Craig Parker’s free kick.

But despite dominating the first half, it looked as though the game would go to form as Newport scored twice to take the lead. The first came when Adam Pryke’s pass released Fazel Koriya to round Boston keeper James Doughty to equalise.

And it looked as though the Swans had done enough when, 16 minutes from time, Darryl Smith put them into the lead with a free header.

But back came Boston and they were quickly level as Parker teed up Jason Field to equalise.

With the game looking to be heading for a draw, Ford smashed home Alex Beck’s cross to claim the unlikely win.
