Powell became a dad for the second time on Wednesday and had barely slept, let alone trained, prior to playing against Millwall on Saturday.

“We said it in pre-season, but I meant it - he looks fantastic. He’s in the best shape of his life. He’s just had another baby and came into the game on Saturday without really sleeping.

“I don’t think he’s a confidence player, but he’s maturing into a good player and sometimes it takes people to develop into who they are. Some people get that early, like Dele for example. Maybe Powelly is developing a little bit later. His movement on Saturday was excellent. He dragged one of the best full backs in the league all over the place.

“I’ve seen it right the way through pre-season. What he did to Seamus Coleman here gave me great confidence in him.

“We can’t ask him to play every week because of what we ask of our wide players, we know he’ll be rotated, but from what I’ve seen of him so far, I can’t ask for anything more.”
