Both sides registered just one shot on target each as the game limped to it's conclusion - a far cry from Dons' lively and all-action affair with Bolton just three days earlier.

But Maynard, coming off the bench, smashed home a wonderful volley from the edge of the penalty area to win it for the home side in the fifth minute of time added on.

Robbie Neilson handed debuts to Robbie Muirhead, Stuart O'Keefe and Maecky Ngombo as he made four changes to the side which started against Bolton on Saturday. Dean Bowditch also returned to the side, with Ed Upson, Harvey Barnes, Chuks Aneke and Nicky Maynard making way.

Initially though, the number of changes appeared to work against Dons as they struggled to gel in the opening hour. After Oldham looked the the more dangerous in the opening 10 minutes, Dons began to find their feet thereafter, but lacked any real quality in the final third.

Dean Bowditch was Dons' livliest spark, twice setting up Kieran Agard, but when he got into a shooting position himself, appeared to wait for Ngombo to arrive in the box in a bid to tee him up instead, rather than having a go himself.

With the second half going much the same as the first, Robbie Neilson withdrew Muirhead, Ngombo and Bowditch - neither of the former two really made an impression on the game - to bring on Barnes, Aneke and Maynard in a bid to inject some life into the tie, reverting effectively to the side which played so well against Bolton.

The changes made a slight difference though as Oldham struggled to get the ball for anything other than long, lumped clearances, but Dons continued to struggle when it came to creating. Both Aneke and Barnes saw a lot of the ball, though Aneke dragged his strike wide when teed up by his fellow substitute.

But with Oldham doing all they could to deny Dons a clear sight of goal, bravely throwing themselves in front of everything, the home side were left frustrated.

Deep into stoppage time though, Barnes' cross into the box was only tentatively cleared, but it sat nicely for Maynard to rattle home the winner.
