Robbo to play the kids at Newport County

Dons won their first match since March on Saturday, beating Shrewsbury 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a second half Daniel Powell strike.

But given Dons’ lack of first team numbers, Robinson admitted he won’t be fielding a strong team in Wales on Tuesday.

“None of these players will start on Tuesday,” he said. “We’re going to put out the youngest MK Dons team ever. I’m playing the youth team.

“I can’t ask the players to play Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday so much with out lack of numbers.”

Dons never looked in trouble against Shrewsbury, despite having to wait until the 72nd minute before Powell netted the winner.

In a game typical of opening day, a fast start preceded a gruelling middle, with both sides settling and feeling each other out.

Powell’s strike came after a fine piece of work from the outstanding Ed Upson, pinching the ball in midfield before a back heeled assist for the winger to smash home from 18 yards.

Robinson said: “Powelly’s like Marmite. But when he performs like that, he’s a fans favourite.

“It was difficult today. We know how good Micky Mellon’s teams are, they’re physical and determined.

“We finished with eight or nine academy players on the pitch - I can’t do any more! The senior players weer magnificent today and their desire was impeccable.

“I thought Darren Potter and Ed Upson were a class act in the middle.

“It’s great to get your first goal, your first win and first clean sheet and we’ve got them all on the same day.”

At the full-time whistle, Robinson had a heated exchange with Shrews captain Adam El-Abd, who clashed with Nicky Maynard before appearing a tread on the striker’s head midway through the first half.

The Dons boss played down the row though.

He said: “I want MK Dons to win, and Adam El-Abd is a winner, so we’re going to clash. I told him what I thought he did, he told me he’s honest and he had nowhere to go and he caught him. I take his word at face value.”
