The 3-2 win was Town’s fifth consecutive league win, but a cup final hangover made for a lackluster first half .

The game sparked into life when Fazel Koriya put Newport ahead four minutes into the second half.

In the hectic seven minute period that followed Star reacted brilliantly by first leveling and then taking the lead through Craig Smith and Bobby Bick.

They bounced back when Koriya scored his second and went on to win the contest in the final minute with a rare goal from Smeathers, capitalising after Dom Lawless’ shot was saved and only half cleared by the Peterborough defence.

The result leaves Newport five points from the summit, but both leaders Kempston Rovers and second place Leicester Nirvana have games in hand over the Swans.
