Newport Pagnell Town’s tough start to the season continued on Tuesday night with a resounding 6-1 defeat at the hands of Long Buckby.
Darren Lynch’s men got their week off to a good start with a solid 0-0 draw on Saturday against Stewarts & Lloyds Corby - their first points of the United Counties League season.
It was also their second clean sheet in a row, following their FA Cup victory over Hatfield Town a week previous.
But the Swans’ defensive confidence was dealt a huge blow on Tuesday night as they were hammered by Long Buckby.
Newport were trailing inside the first minute of the game, and found themselves 2-0 down after just 10 minutes as Long Buckby looked keen to bounce back after losing 5-0 to Spalding on Saturday.
Newport then missed a penalty before John Thorpe pulled one back for the visitors just before half time.
It was still all to play for in the second period, but Long Buckby moved to put the game out of reach immediately, scoring within a minute of the restart to restore their two goal advantage.
With Newport pushing to get back in the game, Long Buckby managed another three goals, including one from the penalty spot, to complete the rout.
Lynch’s men find themselves sitting 14th in the table after three games.
They return to FA Cup action on Saturday, travelling to Kings Langley in the Preliminary Round.
In UCL Division One, Olney Town are 18th in the table after a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Oadby Town, despite goals from Ian Lindop and substitute Dean Robb.
