The talking points after MK Dons' recent road trips

Five things we learned from Dons' games against Shrewsbury and Lincoln

Dons are now 10 points outside of the relegation zone, four games undefeated and have a weekend without a game. Here's what we have learned in the last few days:

He scores every week, sometimes twice

It's now four in four for Rhys Healey as he reached double figures for the season on Tuesday night. It was a spectacular opener on Tuesday night against Lincoln City, bending a free-kick past keeper Josh Vickers after just three minutes. His goals have proven vital in recent weeks too, with the opener in the win against Wycombe, the winner against Rochdale, the equaliser against Shrewsbury and Dons' only goal in the 1-1 draw with Lincoln. At the moment, he is proving to be the striker Dons fans have been crying out for since Will Grigg left the club in 2015. What a difference he could have made had he not been injured earlier this season.

Defensive errors still proving costly

While Healey is banging them in at one end, there are proving to be issues at the other end. Jordan Moore-Taylor's mistake at Montgomery Waters Meadow gifted Shrewsbury their goal, while the entire back four was let off the hook by some dreadful Lincoln finishing three days later at Sincil Bank. Pitches and conditions for both away games were suspect and made their style of play difficult to execute but fortunately, they still picked up important points.

Reverse in away form?

That elusive away win still evades Russell Martin's side, but two points on the road against sides in and around them in League One is nothing to get sniffed at. Dons are now four undefeated, 10 points above the drop zone and edging further up the standings. Though both manager and players are still toeing the line that they are in a relegation battle, picking up form on the road will ultimately be the reason they make gains on the midtable region.

Strength in depth

Regan Poole stepped in for injured Callum Brittain after sitting out since Boxing Day but didn't miss a beat. Conor McGrandles too has missed a few games recently through injury and returned to the side with aplomb. Russell Martin spoke of the strength in depth he has at his disposal, with Poole adding the importance of remaining patient and ready to step in when called upon. Ben Reeves, Louis Thompson and David Kasumu all came on and made a difference against Lincoln, offering Martin real options from the bench.

Another weekend off

It has only been three weeks since the last free weekend in Dons' calendar, but it feels like a lot of football has been played since then. But with their second scheduled 'Bury game' weekend, Dons will once again be given a watching brief as the rest of the division gets to chase the ball. Irrespective of the results on Saturday though, Dons can only drop one place, should Rochdale pick up a point or more against Tranmere, who occupy the final relegation spot.
