Two familiar faces will need to be silenced at Charlton

Two former fan-favourites in the form of Chuks Aneke and Alex Gilbey will be out to stop their old club when MK Dons take on Charlton Athletic on Wednesday night.

Aneke left Stadium MK in the summer of 2019 after securing promotion from League Two, while Gilbey followed a year later following the Addicks' relegation to League One.

Life at Charlton has been stuttering so far for Gilbey, after he suffered an injury which ruled him out for two months, while Aneke has netted five goals in 10 games so far this campaign.

Both played alongside Russell Martin, and Gilbey was one of Dons' top performers when he took over as manager last season and went on to win Player of the Year. And Martin said both will need to be silenced to ensure Dons have a good evening against third placed Charlton.

He said: "Chuks has been excellent for them in recent weeks, he has been a real threat but we know all about that so we have to negate that. And Gilbs is coming back from an injury, but he has done well for them as well. It will be good to see them after the game, but we're focussed on the game.

"Alex played for us, so will be trying to give them as much information as possible to try and beat us and stop us. But that's football and how it works.

"They were both fan favourites for us but now they're playing for Charlton so we've got to go there and try and beat them, and put any allegiances to one side."

On Charlton, Martin added: "They are a brilliant side and expect to go into games being dominant. They are very aggressive and very intense, with a lot of energy and athleticism. Their mentality is strong, they’ve got a lot of experienced players with Championship and Premier League experience.

"It'll be a tough game for us, but it’s a game I’m looking forward to. It’s a good pitch that will help us and we’ve got to go there and show we are difficult to play against. We will get a performance, I go into every game excited about what we can do, we just need to turn our performances into results.

"The players should really be looking forward to it because it’s a great place to play football. We won't go there with fear or trepidation, they are a good side, but we'll go there and be us and hopefully it's enough."
