The 36-year-old former England defender lasted just 38 minutes before slumping to the ground in the FA Cup third round replay against Northampton at stadium:mk, leaving the game before the half time whistle.

Upson’s career at MK Dons has barely been allowed to start with a string of problems preventing him from getting on the pitch.

A mini-revival was thought to have begun when he was handed a surprise start against Charlton in November, but again he failed to make it to half time before going down injured.

And the latest set back may force the former Arsenal, Birmingham and West Ham man to call it a day.

“A man of his quality, and his calibre, he deserves better to finish his career,” said Dons boss Karl Robinson after the 3-0 win over Northampton.

“I hope he has a good sleep tonight, he comes and sees me on Thursday and we have a right good chat. He’s a great human being, but I don’t want this to drift away in the wrong way.

“Hopefully he’ll continue and we’ll drive on. But we’ll see how he is.

“He wants to play football, it’s his life. We’ll see how serious it is and we’ll go from there.”
