'We'll have to see what the chairman wants,' says Robbo

Karl Robinson's future as MK Dons boss is in the hands of Pete Winkelman as the club stand on the brink of relegation back to League 1.

Nine points from safety with five games remaining, Dons will need a remarkable chain of events to survive an immediate return to the third tier.

After Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Rotherham - who Dons replaced in the drop zone after their remarkable run of seven wins out of eight - Robinson hinted his future may lie elsewhere, should he and the chairman have differing opinions on the future of the club.

And on Tuesday, the manager clarified his comments.

“I have to look at myself after each season and look at whether this is what I want to do next year,” he said. “If it’s not, I’m the wrong person for MK Dons.

“We’ll just have to see what the chairman wants for next year.

“I know what I want to do, but we have to sit down and see what direction the club wants to go.

“I don’t think anyone can accept they’re safe because they’ve been here for a long time. That’s not for me to tell the chairman. The chairman picks his employees. I never take the job for granted.

“But the other side is whether I’m the right person for the chairman. If I’m not, it will be constant banging heads against walls.

“We have to sit down and have a chat. I want the club to grow, year in, year out.

“We talk about things at the end of every season. He has to look me in the eye and see whether I’m the right man to carry out his plan.

“I want to be in the Premier League - that’s the goal.”

Should Robinson remain in charge next season, regardless of the division, he admits the club needs a massive overhaul and a change in approach if they are to avoid being a yo-yo club.

He added: “When things don’t go right, you have to change a lot. And some things didn’t change when we came up.

“There are things I’m not happy with, and things the chairman isn’t happy with, and things the players aren’t happy with.

“You have to break down every area and really dissect everything, and rebuild it.”
