Tasked with the mission to save MK Dons from relegation, Robbie Neilson dipped into the international market in 2017 to land a striker he hoped would make a difference in the scrap - he came back with Maecky Ngombo from Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Having cut his teeth early in his career at Roda JC in the Netherlands, netting five goals in 18 appearances, Ngombo moved to Germany in 2016. There he made seven appearances for Fortuna before being loaned out to Milton Keynes.

The third signing of the January window, the striker, who made one U21s appearance for Belgium, arrived after Robbie Muirhead and Harvey Barnes, realising a childhood dream of his to play in England.

"I’ve spoken to the manager and I believe we can do good things. I’m looking forward to training and playing," he said. But he did precious little of the latter.

Making just one start, at home against Oldham in a turgid 1-0 win, Ngombo made just nine appearances for the club without scoring before returning to Germany.

But he was surplus to requirements at Fortuna, and his contract was terminated upon his return. He spent six months out of the game before returning to Roda in January 2018, before stints in Italy before a return to the Dutch game with Go Ahead Eagles at the start of this season.

The Eagles sit sixth in Eerste Divisie - the Dutch second tier - with Ngombo scoring twice in 12 appearances.
