Reports north of the border at sister paper Edinburgh Evening News, the Hearts boss could be confirmed in the position on Thursday, with a compensation package agreed over the weekend.

Something of a hero at Tynecastle, having spent 10 years as a player at the club, Neilson made 200 appearances for Hearts during his playing career. Not known for his goal-scoring prowess, he is fondly remembered by fans for his winner in the UEFA Cup away at Basel - his only career goal - in 2004.

Now 36, Neilson already has a promotion under his belt, winning the 2014/15 Scottish Championship at a canter, and guided Hearts to third place in the Scottish Premiership last season.

But he is coming under fire from some sections of the Hearts supporters, despite the club sitting fourth in the table, just two points behind second place.

His side take on Rangers on Wednesday night and could replace them in second should they win, but it could be his last action in the Tynecastle dugouts before taking over the reins at Stadium MK.

Hearts confirmed the approach in a statement today which read: “The club can confirm that MK Dons have made an official approach to Heart of Midlothian in relation to Head Coach Robbie Neilson.

“Robbie is aware of the approach but he remains fully focused on the immediate task at hand, which is of course, Rangers at home on Wednesday.

“No further comment or statement will be made by the club until after this match.”
