But following their relegation, he was released and put pen to paper on a deal with Dons for the remainder of the season.
Surman's career began in 2004 at another south-coast club Southampton. Coming through the academy surrounded by some top talent, Surman was given first team experience while out on loan at Walsall, where he netted on his league debut. Impressing for the Saddlers, he earned his first loan move to Bournemouth where he played every league game for them during his spell for the first half of the 2005/06 season. Upon returning to Southampton, he missed the thrilling 4-3 FA Cup tie against Dons as he was cup-tied.
From there, he became a Saints regular, racking up nearly 150 appearances before Wolves splashed the cash - over £1 million - to lure the midfielder to Molineux as they secured promotion to the Premier League. After a season in gold, he then moved to Norwich, again for a fee in excess of £1 million, where he played alongside Russell Martin.

Surman was a fixture in the side as Bournemouth won the Championship to secure promotion to the Premier League. In the top flight, he played every minute of league football for Bournemouth during that first season.
Surman remained a regular in Bournemouth's side until they were relegated from the Premier League this summer, and he was released amassing just shy of 200 appearances for the club, scoring five goals.
