A Milton Keynes golfer has won one of the major trophies at the Leighton Buzzard club to collect his first piece of silverware since joining the 600-member club nine years ago.
Kents Hill based freelance IT consultant John Clavey teamed up with former Club Captain Stuart Oliver in the final of the coveted Rosebury Cup, facing retired accountant John Smith and his playing partner teacher David Jones.
In a ding-dong encounter, the alias Smith &Jones duo clawed back a three shot deficit to take the final into “extra time”.
West Brom fan John, in line to be Club Captain in 2017 after a year as understudy to incoming Captain Adrian Stephenson, downed a 12-foot putt to take the tie to a second play-off hole.
That’s where their luck ran out, three-putting as 53-year-old Clavey downed a five-footer for a par 3 to win the final tie after victories in four earlier rounds.
Said John: “I’ve reached the semi-final of competitions before, but this was the first of what I hope will be several trophy wins in the years to come.”
