Golf star Ian Poulter was at the centre of a social media flurry on Friday, after Tweeting that his nanny had been downgraded on a 10-hour flight.

The 38-year-old, who lives in Milton Keynes, vented his frustration that the downgrading meant that his wife had been left alone with the couple’s four children in business class. Their nanny was seated in second class.

Although the golfer explained in later Tweets that he thought British Airways was providing poor service, some other Twitter users were less sympathetic.

@MsiDouglas wrote: “Thoughts with you at this dark time Ian”

@jaimelondonboy was less sardonic: “One of the funniest stories I have read today. No nanny for 10 hours? Poor them. How did they manage?”

@HelenxLouise went for the jugular: “Oh boohoo don’t have 4 kids if you cant look after them.. all those poor kids being killed and he is moaning”

Goldfishwars played it straight with: “Woke up after terrible nightmares about Ian Poulter and his poor family’s plight. When will their suffering end?”

And sports magazine Golf News baldly stated: “Leading golfer Ian Poulter accused of being out of touch with reality”

Mr Poulter defended his position with later Tweets, writing “Don’t think you should bring into question Katie’s mothering skills. You can bash me like you do already. She is a brilliant mum,” and “Just making a point. @British_Airways you might not get what you pay for. Why sell something then say you can’t have it after it’s paid.”

Ian Poulter is one of Europe’s leading golfers, known for his distinctive dress sense. His career highlights include two World Golf Championship wins at the 2010 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and the 2012 WGC-HSBC Champions. He is the touring professional for Woburn Golf and Country Club
