The Russian was left stricken at the back of the grid as the rest of the field formed up at the start, leaving him to watch the race from the pits, rather than out on track.

It capped a miserable weekend for the 21-year-old, who could only qualify 18th on the grid.

Kvyat’s Red Bull Racing debut last season ended a similar way, with the Russian left to question his luck Down Under.

He said: “It looks like an electronic issue put us out of the race before it started.

“I think Australia doesn’t seem to be the luckiest place for me so far.

“The car just shut itself off – I guess it didn’t want to do the race today, but we’ll be back in Bahrain and we’ll start again from there!”
