The 20-year-old gambled with a late stop and caught Raikkonen on aged tyres, forcing the Ferrari out at Turn 16 to claim third place.

But the race would be short lived for team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who was forced into retirement on lap 16 as his engine cut out, forcing him into retirement for the first time since July.

Starting 16th on the grid after picking up a 10-place grid penalty after an engine element change, Verstappen battled through the field to join up with the front runners after their early stops.

The Dutchman would be the joker in the pack in the dying stages as he stopped for a second time, forcing second placed Sebastian Vettel into a stop to cover him. The pair then overtook ailing Valteri Bottas in the Mercedes, who stayed out trying to make his tyres last. While Vettel then passed team-mate Kimi Raikkonen to retake second place, Verstappen caught the other Ferrari and made a bold move in the final sector of the final lap to snatch third place away at the death.

Lewis Hamilton won for the fifth time at the Circuit of the Americas to extend his championship lead over Vettel.
