Club chairman Mick Bromilow received the Master of the University honour from the OU, while headcoach David Millett was honoured as England Athletics Coach of the Year.

Mick, who has recently retired from the Open University has been awarded the degree of Master of the University, a very prestigious award where his contribution for an exceptional contribution to teaching and learning has been acknowledged with his parallel career in athletics, where his voluntary efforts have deeply enriched the local sporting and wider community.

Mick was involved with the setting up of the then Milton Keynes Athletics Club in 1976 as it emerged from the Wolverton A.C. He was the inaugural Honorary Secretary and as well as being an active athlete he was involved with coaching, team managing and officiating.

He has served as Chairman since 1992 for one of the largest and most successful voluntary groups in the area. It has produced some fantastic elite athletes who have competed on the world stage, including Olympians Chris Clarke, Mervyn Luckwell, Craig Pickering and most famously, the long jumper, Greg Rutherford.

Mick is deeply involved in the day-to-day details of the Club, serving as timekeeper, webmaster and fundraiser. But he also has ambitious strategic vision where, under his leadership, the Club has gained a well-deserved reputation for thorough administrative management, enthusiastic volunteers and investment in coaching and training. He has helped the Club to win the England Athletics “Club of the Year” on back-to-back occasions.

In his dedication to helping people to realise their potential, his focus on inclusion and his engagement with the local community, Mick exemplifies the very best of the Open University.

David, apart from his role as Club Secretary, is Head Coach of Youth Development at Marshall Milton Keynes AC, delivering the Athletics 365 programme to all junior athletes who come through the club, developing their overall athleticism to achieve in their event group that follows. Athletics 365 is a multi-event, young people development programme, which introduces athletes to the fundamental skills of athletics. It is aimed predominantly at 8-15 year olds, but the resources can easily be adapted for use with younger athletes

He has become one of the best known deliverers of Athletics 365 in the country and has delivered an impressive number of workshops and flying coach visits across the country this year. Just recently he was asked to deliver an Athletics 365 and youth development workshop in Gibraltar

At event level, David is an excellent hurdles coach. His passion to share knowledge and facilitate the development of both coaches and athletes contributes significantly to developing athletes of the future

David was initially awarded the Coach of the Year for South-East England. Subsequently, at the England Athletics Awards Evening for club volunteers held in Birmingham, David was honoured as England Athletics Coach of the Year.
