Motorsport’s next kart star

In January, Darroch Marshall was just like any other 13-year-old. Now, he’s one of the most sought after talents in go-karting.

After a seemingly innocuous trip to the Daytona karting centre, marshalls were quick to point out the youngster’s talent to mum Rachel.

Since then, he has gone on to break the track record at Daytona and has proven that he’s not just a flash in the pan, impressing team bosses watching on at Wilton Mill this week.

So impressed were they in fact, Darroch was offered a spot on GW Motorsport’s team for the forthcoming Formula Stars kart championship - the series organised by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to be used as a direct link to the pinnacle of motorsport.

“It has all happened so fast,” said mum Rachel. “Being a racing driver was never really in his mind until he went to Daytona.

“After his first session, he asked if he could do work experience there, and do something along the lines of engineering to get into motorsport.

He’s still a bit oblivious to all the hype around him.

“He’s still a bit oblivious to all the hype around him at the moment.”

BenJames, a spokesman from Daytona said: “He came to us a few months ago and straight away we noticed he was different. He took to the karts so naturally.

“He’s got a great future ahead of him,”

But that hype has seen his name spread around motor-racing circles like wildfire, with a £17,000 sponsorship deal already secured for the forthcoming season. This is only half the amount he needs to compete in the series though.
