Buying a house put his racing career on hold for more than a year, but Trevor Gregory bounced back in style with a fantastic win at Snetterton.

The 29-year-old from Furzton romped to victory in the Bucks Automotive Renault Clio and in doing so caused quite a stir in the paddock.

Gregory races in the Stock Hatch series as well as the Clio 182 Cup, which are both tightly controlled championships – with restrictions on how the cars can be prepared.

Having only tested the Clio in a handful of laps at Mallory Park, he took to the Snetterton track and blew the field away, posting a pole position time half a second faster than his nearest rival.

The Clios would start 10 seconds after the rest of the field to keep classes separate. Leading at the end of the first lap, Gregory missed a gear and fell down the pecking order as a result.

“For the rest of the race, I kept missing the gear,” he said. “But it turns out the gear rod had snapped, so it’s no wonder it was missing! We got it repaired in time for the second race though.”

And it’s just as well, as he went on to drive the race of his life. Starting again with a 10 second penalty, the Clio grid races after the rest of the competitors, catching them quickly.

By the end of lap six, he had made his way through the field and was leading the pack.

Such was his pace that he opened a huge gap to his fellow Clio rivals as well as the Stock Hatch racers.

He crossed the line to take the chequered flag and score his first career victory. And he admitted that he didn’t know what to do next.

“I’ve always just watched racing, so I have seen people waving to the fans, pumping their fists, going crazy,” said Gregory.

“I didn’t know what to do! I think I flashed my lights a few times. I was stunned but utterly delighted too. Along with my dad, we’ve both been racing a long time so we were so pleased to get a trophy.”

Gregory is next in action at Penbrey, racing in his Stock Hatch Citroen Saxo on June 15-16 before his home race at Silverstone in August, where he will be back in the Clio.
